The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark TwainAfter his popular best-selling novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, author Mark Twain released a sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This book is about Tom Sawyer’s best friend, Huckleberry Finn, and his own adventure that takes place after Twain’s original book. However, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a very controversial book, and has been banned, for good reason, because of its use of racism, alcoholism, child abuse, theft, murder and a variety of other inappropriate ventures. Due to this, it should be kept out of the hands of children.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has remained a very controversial, and commonly banned, book to this day. One of the leading reasons for this outrage is the racism in the book. Within the book, the word “nigger” is used several times, a word that many don’t want their children to be reading. For example, Twain writes, “It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger...” (Twain 89). This shows the ethnocentrism of whites, and the lower social position of Negroes. Therefore, this is one of the main reasons thatThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a banned book. Another reason that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a banned book is the apparent child abuse in the first part of the book. Of course, this is something that parents would rather not have their children read. Twain writes, “He said he’d [whip] me till I was black and blue if I didn’t raise some money for him” (Twain 23). This shows the ease at which Twain displays things that most parents would rather not have their children know about until a more appropriate age. In conclusion, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be a banned book because of its inappropriate material. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling has captivated millions of readers all around the world with its masterful writing and amazing story. It is a finely crafted magical world for the reader to explore while following the exciting journey of the main characters. Finishing those books, however, is a problem because books as magical as Harry Potter are very hard to find. However, there is a solution. If you enjoyed the dynamic world-building, the flawed yet magnificent characters, and the clever yet precise plot of Harry Potter then you will enjoy the same elements in The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands.
Harry Potter features a variety of characters all representing a different mentality and value. Harry Potter is a remarkably selfless person, who cringes at the very thought of people sacrificing anything for him. He is also very stubborn and caring for his friends and family. For example, Harry says, “‘If you think I’m going to let six people risk their lives—!’” (Rowling 48). This shows how Harry is a very self-less person. Similarly, Christopher Rowe, the main character in The Blackthorn Key, is a stubborn person with a lot of ideas and love for his master and best friend. In the story, Christopher says, “‘Please, Tom. Stay away. Promise me.’” This shows the similarly selfless nature of Christopher. Ron Weasley, the best friend of Harry Potter is amazingly loyal, and stayed with Harry for the entire course of his dangerous adventures. Again, Thomas Bailey, the best friend of Christopher Rowe, risked his life and his family to aid Christopher throughout his adventures. It is easy to find the variety and detailed character personalities apparent in Harry Potter in The Blackthorn Keyas well. Another aspect that Harry Potter and The Blackthorn Key share is their profound and surprising plot. Harry Potter features a 7-book-long plot full of adventures, climaxes, and suspense as the mystery of Lord Voldemort’s power slowly unravels into a thrilling ending. It is centered around an orphaned boy who is trying to stop a dark wizard from gaining immense power and ruling the Wizarding World. Through this adventure, the boy gains friends, allies and enemies as he tries to solve the mystery of Lord Voldemort’s aims and power. Rowling writes, “He alone knew where in Hogwarts he had stowed the Horcrux, because he alone had plumbed the deepest secrets of that place” (Rowling 468). This shows the excitement and intrigue evident in Harry Potter. Amazingly, The Blackthorn Key has a very similar and exciting plot. The Blackthorn Key is about a boy whose master was killed, and is struggling to solve the mystery of his master’s death and bring justice to those responsible. However, things take a turn when he realizes the true goal of the villains, to obtain a military power the world has never seen before. Sands writes, “Codes within codes. Secrets within secrets.” (Sands 321). Of course, reading this, readers know they’re in for some excitement. Fans of Harry Potter’s dynamic and exciting plot will not be disappointed in The Blackthorn Key. One of the most amazing things in the Harry Potter series is its magical overlay on a very real and brutal world. It is apparent that Harry Potter takes place in real-world Britain without most of the “muggles” even knowing about it. However, the values and hardships in Harry Potter are very characteristic of real life, because obviously, the evil side has magic as well. In the novel, Harry yells, “‘They will torture and kill you like they did my parents!’” (Rowling 35). This shows the level of cruelty and reality in Harry Potter. This is also apparent in The Blackthorn Key. Christopher Rowe struggles throughout the book in a world unaccustomed to the level of power he is dealing with. Most of the world, while aware of some of the murders, does not care about the level of danger they are all in. Sands writes, “The Archangel’s fire was never meant for mortal men” (Sands 297). This shows the level of power in play in The Blackthorn Key.Therefore, those who enjoyed the magical overlay on a brutal world apparent in Harry Potter will enjoy the same aspect inThe Blackthorn Key. The magical worlds of Harry Potter and The Blackthorn Key both have an innovative variety of personality, exciting plot, and clever world-building. Both Harry Potter and The Blackthorn Key contain various different personalities and values. Both books also share an amazing and intriguing plotline. Finally, both books also contain a very nice overlay of magic onto a brutal world. Don’t worry, everything that fans love in the universally cherished Harry Potter they will find and enjoy the The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands. 0 Comments
